Relaxing Bike Trip Along the Coast from Valencia to Gandía

This two-day bike trip is ideally combined with a visit to the surprising city of Valencia. After exploring Valencia, you’ll ride along paths and quiet little roads by the Mediterranean Sea, heading south.

  • Tour info: 3 days, 2 nights, 2 cycling days

The climate in the south of Valencia is such that you can enjoy this trip throughout the year. By the end, you’ll know where the rice for paella comes from, and especially how real paella tastes.

You’ll cycle past orange groves, rice fields, beaches, and through the Albufera National Park. In this peaceful oasis, you’ll ride along Spain’s largest freshwater lake, home to around 300 species of birds, including flamingos that winter here. What will surprise you most is the great variety of landscapes that pass by. You’ll finish in Gandía, a place nestled between the mountains and the sea. Here, you can end your journey with a visit to the historic center and the Ducal Palace.

Hans’s Experience

“I rode this route a few years ago and was surprised. Large parts of the Valencia coast are, of course, focused on tourism. And then I found this area that is actually quiet, where nature still has space. Not something you would expect so close to the big city. It’s also nice that you don’t have to cycle through suburbs for long when leaving the city. You’re out of the city fairly quickly. Once on the road, I was struck by the variety of landscapes. Dunes and beaches, a huge lake with a great diversity of birds, rice fields… On the way, we stopped at one of the villages along the beach of Devesa, a wide beach stretching five kilometers. Cullera also has a nice wide beach. And near Gandía, we saw a system of waterways and canals behind the coast. Something you wouldn’t expect here at all. It was only two days, but we saw a lot. A great way to extend your city trip to Valencia.”

Highlights

  • Discover the origin of Paella
  • Lunch on deserted beaches
  • Admire the beautiful Ducal Palace of Gandía
  • Cycle through the Albufera National Park

Tips

  • Stop for lunch at a local restaurant and order a Paella Valenciana (with meat), Paella Marisco (with seafood), or Paella de Verduras (with vegetables). Enjoy this large meal not in the evening, but rather at midday.
  • If you’re interested in bird watching, the Racó de l’Olla Interpretation Center is the place to be. Here you’ll find more information about the park’s birds, and from the observatories and the watchtower, you’ll have a panoramic view of the area.
  • Once you arrive in Gandía, a visit to the Ducal Palace is well worth it. You’ll be amazed by the grandeur of this 15th-century palace, with its ‘Golden Gallery’ and ‘Coronation Hall’.
