Don’t Miss It: Cycling the Bárdenas Reales

Written by Cycling Spain

Navarra is a region with many faces. In the north the high peaks of the Pyrenees, and in the south the plains reminiscent of Castile. The region is also home to the largest desert in Europe, the Bárdenas Reales, and when you visit this place you really cannot believe your eyes. There are several cycling routes through the desert that you can easily ride with a sturdy bike. The elevation gain is limited and the distances are reasonable. The route most people take is 39 kilometers long, on an unpaved and easily accessible road. If it above 30 degrees or it has rained, it is a good idea to postpone your ride. We went in September and rode in 30-degree weather and left early in the morning, which went great. During our ride, we thoroughly enjoyed the light, the wide-open space, the colors, and the views of the eroded mountains. If you have a choice, the best time to ride is on a weekday because there are fewer cars and therefore less dust. If you are looking for a rental bike, go to the village of Arguedas, which is located on the access road to the park. There you will find Ciclos Marton on the main street.

If you want to know more about the Bárdenas Reales, read the report written by travel journalist Leo Meijer during his visit to the park. Visit: Bardenas Reales
