Via Verde Ojos Negros - 3 cycling days

The tour starts in Teruel. You will receive a tour briefing with a detailed explanation of the journey and all the necessary materials for your trip. This city is the capital of Mudéjar art and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, you can enjoy the cultural and architectural heritage of Teruel, such as the Neomudéjar Escalinata, Torre del Salvador, Plaza del Tórico, Los Amantes de Teruel, the Catedral de Santa María de Mediavilla, the Puente de Piedra, and the Portal de San Roque, as well as the local cuisine, in which truffle plays an important role.

You leave Teruel heading towards La Estación Mora. Along the way, you pass Pista de Fuente Cerrada, a recreational area with pine forests and riverside vegetation. You then climb up to Puerto de Escandón, an old mining railway station, and cross the Sierra Javalambre. You descend towards Puebla de Valverde and pass La Fondica de la Estación, an old mining station with an outdoor terrace next to the Via Verde Ojos Negros. This is an ideal spot to take a break and grab something to eat.

From Puebla de Valverde to Sarrión and Albentosa, you cross spectacular stone bridges, viaducts, and tunnels. You cycle through a beautiful landscape surrounded by holm oaks. This region is home to the largest production of black truffles in the world. You arrive at La Estación Mora, where you will spend the night. Here, you can enjoy unique experiences such as truffle tourism and astro-tourism. As this is an area with little light pollution, you can enjoy the clearest night skies in Spain.

Your journey takes you to Segorbe, a city with a beautiful historic center. A large portion of this route is downhill. You pass through the Albentosa tunnel, and at the end, you’ll find an impressive viaduct—the highest on the Via Verde—that offers spectacular views. When you reach the old mining station El Palancar, you enter the province of Castellón. Along the way, you pass through the El Palancar forest, an important area with Valencian oaks and holm oaks.

You will pass through charming villages such as Barracas, Caudiel, Jérica, and Navajas. From the Ragudo viewpoint, you can enjoy incredible views of the Sierra Calderona and Sierra Espadán nature parks. After passing Jérica, you return to the Via Verde and turn left to cross the impressive Regajo reservoir towards Navajas. There, you can enjoy the beautiful natural setting of El Salto de la Novia (a 60-meter waterfall). In the square of Navajas, you’ll find the spectacular Navajas elm tree, planted in 1636 as a symbol of unity between the existing residents and the newcomers. The Navajas elm was chosen as the Tree of the Year in 2019. You leave Navajas and cross the spectacular Sierra Calderona nature park to reach Segorbe. This city welcomes you with its impressive architectural heritage. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon with a walk through the old town center.

You depart from Segorbe to cycle to Valencia. Along the way, you pass through beautiful inland villages and orange groves, and cross the Sierra Calderona Natural Park until you reach Torres Torres. Then, you ride through the Vía Churra and Vía Augusta. Along the way, you cycle alongside the Mediterranean Sea and through the heart of the Valencian vegetable gardens. You can stop for lunch in El Puig. It’s a longer distance, but mostly downhill!

oday our tour ends, but you still have plenty of time to explore Valencia on your own. On one hand, Valencia is home to impressive cultural heritage and architectural and historical buildings such as the Cathedral of Valencia, the Tribunal de las Aguas, the Lonja, the Torre de los Serranos, the Plaza de Toros de Valencia, and the Mercado Central. On the other hand, the modern side is reflected in La Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, an architectural and cultural complex designed by Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela. Another defining feature of Valencia is the Turia riverbed, known as the lungs of Valencia. You can walk or cycle to your heart’s content in this city!

Trekking tours with a difficulty level of 3/5 are suitable for the average touring cyclist. These tours are not overly long but may involve some elevation gain. The routes can include extended sections of unpaved terrain (gravel) but are always passable. There may be 1 or 2 days that are somewhat longer and more challenging. Average daily distances range between 30 and 50 kilometers, with 200 to 400 meters of elevation gain per day.

From Valencia, you have two options to reach the start: either use our optional transfer service available for this trip or travel by train.

If you rent bikes, you will likely need the optional transfer service to transport the bikes to Teruel. You can join the transfer for free.

Alternatively, you can take the train from Valencia to Teruel. This is a good option if you plan to leave your car in Teruel and pick it up after the trip. Taking bikes on the train is possible, just reserve your spot beforehand.
