In short

This cycling trip follows two of the most beautiful green routes in northern Spain: first the quiet Vía Verde Vasco-Navarro between Vitoria and Pamplona, then the Plazaola route towards the coast. Together they form a chain of old railway lines, silent valleys and green hills. Along the way you discover the real Basque Country: both the beautiful landscape and the atmosphere of the towns you pass through.

This cycling trip begins on the old railway line that is now the Vía Verde Vasco-Navarro. Spain has many of these green cycling paths, but this route has its own character. That’s not only because you ride quietly through rolling hills, but also because the landscape keeps changing as you go.

You start in Vitoria, a calm city with wide squares and green parks. In the old town you immediately feel the relaxed atmosphere of the Basque Country.

Between Vitoria and Pamplona you cycle through forests, open fields and small villages. It’s an easygoing route that connects two remarkable Basque cities, showing you how peaceful northern Spain can be.

Pamplona is a city that invites you to wander for a while. In the narrow streets around the old fortress, you’ll find the quieter side of a place that is so much more than its famous festival week.

From Pamplona you follow the well-known Vía Verde del Plazaola. This area is among the most beautiful parts of Navarra and the Basque Country. What strikes you most is how green everything is. Parts of the route follow small rivers and streams in the valley, and you’ll pass a few springs where you can refill your water bottle. The entire Vía Verde del Plazaola is, of course, car-free. Only after leaving Pamplona and just before reaching San Sebastián will you encounter a bit of traffic.

You ride gently uphill at first, then descend gradually towards Andoain. Here the Vía Verde ends, and you pedal a short final stretch before reaching the special city of San Sebastián. It’s a pleasant place to wander, with wide promenades and lively squares. In the old quarter you’ll find plenty of cafés where you can unwind and look back on your journey.

Itinerary

You can expand each day for more information.

  • Day 1 – Arrival Vitoria-Gasteiz

You arrive in Vitoria, a calm and green city that feels pleasant after the journey. In the historic centre you can take your time to stroll past squares and cafés. Here you will receive your bikes, if applicable. A gentle start before setting off the next day.

    3052 Vitoria Gasteiz
  • Day 2 – Vitoria - Gasteiz - Maestu (31km, 400m+ of 78km, 700m+)

You leave Vitoria behind and quietly follow the Vía Verde Vasco-Navarro. The path leads you through forests and small villages, with a short detour around the closed Laminoria tunnel. Afterwards you descend gradually toward Maestu. The longer option adds a loop around the large reservoir and feels a bit more sporty, but both routes bring you into the same quiet valley.

    3052 Santa Cruz de Campezo
  • Day 3 – Maestu - Estella / Ayegui (45km, 150m+)

After Maestu the landscape opens up and you continue along the old railway line into Navarra. The route keeps a soft, rolling rhythm and leads you past farmland and small hamlets. Without hurry you roll into Estella, where the former railway ends. The centre is a short walk away and a pleasant place to spend the afternoon.

    3052 Estella
  • Day 4 – Estella / Ayegui - Pamplona (60km, 700m+)

Today you leave the Vía Verde and mostly follow the Camino de Santiago — though in the opposite direction. The landscape becomes more varied, with open hills and quiet farm roads. Now and then a climb asks for some extra attention, but you are rewarded with wide views. By late afternoon you cycle into Pamplona, where the old town invites you to wander a little longer.

3052 Pamplona La plaza del Castillo
  • Day 5 – Pamplona - Lekunberri (40 km 450m+)

You ride out of Pamplona under the watchful eye of Mount San Cristobal, heading to the start of the Vía Verde del Plazaola in the village of Sarasa. After Sarasa there’s a short, steep climb, but then the gentle rhythm typical of the vías verdes takes over. You climb slowly, often without noticing it. The route is beautiful, through forests and along rivers. And the most scenic part is still ahead. Suddenly the town of Lekunberri appears. Its old station has been converted into a visitor centre for the Vía Verde del Plazaola, with an information desk and a cosy bar with a terrace.

    3052 VV de Plazaola 12
  • Day 6 – Lekunberri - San Sebastián (65 km 170m+)

As soon as you start pedalling and leave the old station behind, you find yourself in a striking landscape. Green slopes, forests and valleys accompany you to the end of the Vía Verde. This is a stretch where you really ride through nature. The beauty of this route is that you cycle through mountain scenery without steep climbs, thanks to the many tunnels. You even pass through the longest Vía Verde tunnel in Spain. The Vía Verde del Plazaola ends in Andoain. From here you continue along a quiet route to your hotel in the beautiful and very bike-friendly city of San Sebastián.

    3052 VV de Plazaola 2
  • Day 7 – End of tour: San Sebastián

After breakfast the journey comes to an end. You still have time for a walk through San Sebastián or a coffee on the promenade before travelling onward on your own.

Reviews
An amazing self-guided e-bike tour from Pamplona to San Sebastián, perfectly organised and beautiful to ride.

We did a self guided tour on e-bikes from Pamplona to San Sebastián. It was amazing! I highly recommend Cycling Spain. Everything worked perfectly. The Cycle shop delivered the bikes to our hotel and moved our luggage from point to point with no issues. The app gave us great directions and we didn’t have any trouble following the route. Day 2 was especially lovely for us as the weather was better and the route was mostly downhill. Absolutely stunning views. The trail was very well maintained and made riding easy. The e-bikes were really nice to make the climbs easier. There were a couple places I would have been walking on a regular bike! We had a great meal at the hotel in Lukenberri. The only piece of advice is to be sure to have a headlight or headlamp for the tunnels. They can be very dark. If you are considering this tour…do not hesitate.
