De Via Verde de la Sierra: 37km enjoyment

Written by Cycling Spain

Cycling this Via Verde in Andalusia is a special experience

We had already been battling a headwind for half a day on a section of Paul Benjaminse’s Andalusia route and that day it really wasn’t easy. Until we joined the Via Verde de la Sierra at Olvera. The next 37 kilometres were pure enjoyment.

The Via Verde de la Sierra lies deep in the interior of Andalusia, in a mountainous area where, as a cyclist, you would normally only make slow, hard-fought progress. But thanks to the work of railway engineers, there is a beautiful route here without any steep climbs, right through nature. To bridge all the height differences, 30 tunnels and 4 viaducts were needed. If the line (which was originally planned to be much longer) had not been turned into a Via Verde, all their work would actually have been in vain, because not a single train has ever run here!

The official route runs from Puerto Serrano to Olvera (climbing from 150 to 450 metres), but you can just as easily cycle it the other way around. At the old station building in Puerto Serrano you’ll find the office that manages the Via Verde. There is a restaurant, and you can stay overnight there for a modest price. There is plenty of parking space, also for campervans. We saw people park their car here and cycle the route up and down.

Along the way you pass the old station of Coripe, where a very pleasant restaurant with a terrace (and overnight options) has been created. You won’t encounter any villages or towns en route. At the end point in Olvera you’ll again find a hotel-restaurant and a large car park.

The tunnels are sometimes quite long (up to 1 km) but well lit. Inside, the wind can blow strongly at times, and it is always much cooler than outside. A small part of the route is asphalted (8 km), the rest—compacted earth—is easy to ride.

Because of its impressive landscape, the Via Verde de la Sierra is one of our absolute favourites.
