In short

This bike tour mostly follows the Via Verde del Plazaola. Spain has many Vias Verdes—bike paths built on former railway lines—but the Via Verde del Plazaola has something magical, which is why it ranks high on our favorites list. First, because it connects two iconic Basque cities: Pamplona and San Sebastian. And second, because the scenery is truly stunning. Forests, rivers, and green meadows create a beautiful backdrop here.

  • 3 stages and 3 nights. Approximately 125 km from Pamplona to San Sebastian + city of San Sebastian
  • Tour info: 4 days, 3 nights, 3 cycling days
  • 50 to 65 km/day

Would you like to enjoy this beautiful landscape for longer? Then we recommend our wonderful cycling trip that combines several Via Verdes in this region. You will cycle from Vitoria to Pamplona and San Sebastián.

This area is among the most picturesque regions of Navarra and the Basque Country. The entire Via Verde del Plazaola is, of course, car-free. Only after Pamplona and before San Sebastian will you see some cars. You’ll first ride slightly uphill and then gradually descend towards Andoain. There, the Via Verde ends, and you pedal a little further before reaching the unique city of San Sebastian. You can extend your trip with an extra night to give you time to explore this delightful city (by bike).

Highlights

  • The charming old town of Pamplona
  • The green valleys, forests, rivers, and Basque villages
  • The dripstone tunnel you cycle through
  • The beach, beautiful buildings, and pintxos bars of San Sebastian

Itinerary

You can expand each day for more information.

  • Day 1 - Arrival in Pamplona. Relaxing day in the charming city

Before you start cycling, it’s time to enjoy Pamplona with its charming center full of old streets lined with restaurants and (tapas) bars. Pamplona is the capital of Navarra and one of the highlights of Basque culture. Take a walk to the castle where pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago enter the city. If you have chosen to rent a bike, you can pick it up in the city today so you can set off at your leisure tomorrow. But first, relax and enjoy an evening in the vibrant atmosphere of Pamplona.

  • Day 2 - Pamplona – Lekunberri (40 km, 450m+)

You cycle out of Pamplona under the watchful eye of Mount San Cristobal, heading towards the starting point of the Via Verde del Plazaola in the village of Sarasa. After Sarasa, there’s a very short, steep climb, but then it’s like most Vias Verdes: you always climb very gradually, sometimes almost imperceptibly. The route is beautiful, passing through forests and along rivers. And just imagine—the most scenic part of the Via Verde is still to come. Suddenly, you find yourself in the town of Lekunberri. The train station has been converted into a visitor center for the Via Verde del Plazaola, with an information desk and a cozy bar with a terrace.

  • Day 3: Lekunberri – San Sebastián (65 km, 170m+)

As soon as we start pedaling and leave the old station behind, we suddenly find ourselves in a stunning landscape. Green hills, forests, and valleys accompany us to the end of the Via Verde. This is a section where you truly ride through nature. The beauty of this Via Verde is that you cycle through a mountainous landscape without having to climb steeply. This is thanks in part to the many tunnels along the route. You’ll even pass through the longest Via Verde tunnel in Spain. When a tunnel is closed, we follow an alternative route. The Via Verde del Plazaola ends in Andoain. From here, you continue on a quiet route to your hotel in the beautiful and very bike-friendly city of San Sebastian. This is where the arrangement ends, but we recommend extending your stay by at least one more night in the city. There is so much to see and do here.

  • Day 4 - Loop in San Sebastián (30 km)

Today is the day to explore San Sebastián. Take the day to visit the beaches, neighborhoods, and streets filled with restaurants, bars, and shops. The La Concha beach is simply stunning. Don’t forget to try the “pintxos,” small bites offered in many restaurants. Don’t call them ‘tapas’ because pintxos are true culinary masterpieces. Speaking of culinary delights… San Sebastián is nationally and even globally renowned for its excellent restaurants. Here, you’ll find the highest concentration of Michelin stars.

Reviews
An amazing self-guided e-bike tour from Pamplona to San Sebastián, perfectly organised and beautiful to ride.

We did a self guided tour on e-bikes from Pamplona to San Sebastián. It was amazing! I highly recommend Cycling Spain. Everything worked perfectly. The Cycle shop delivered the bikes to our hotel and moved our luggage from point to point with no issues. The app gave us great directions and we didn’t have any trouble following the route. Day 2 was especially lovely for us as the weather was better and the route was mostly downhill. Absolutely stunning views. The trail was very well maintained and made riding easy. The e-bikes were really nice to make the climbs easier. There were a couple places I would have been walking on a regular bike! We had a great meal at the hotel in Lukenberri. The only piece of advice is to be sure to have a headlight or headlamp for the tunnels. They can be very dark. If you are considering this tour…do not hesitate.
